Welcome to the UC San Diego Library, which fuels the campus community – faculty, students, instructors, and others – with the information and knowledge resources and services needed to support the University's dynamic research, teaching, learning, and public service enterprises.

Ranked among the top 25 public academic research libraries in the nation, our Library is known for its innovative leadership in providing 24/7 digital access to a wide range of information resources, including streaming film, e-books, electronic journals, and other materials. We also have been digitizing our physical collections at a rapid pace, with nearly 700 collections publically accessible.

The Library has also been playing a central role in data curation, a critical part of the University's research cyberinfrastructure initiative. In today's digital era, research cyberinfrastructure is essential in supporting and advancing the huge amount of research generated by our faculty and students. These data need to be effectively and safely stored online, where they can be shared with other researchers and, eventually, members of the public.

While the Library preserves and provides access to vast quantities of digital and online media, students and other patrons continue to visit the Library in large numbers for individual and group study, research, librarian consultations, and checking out books and other materials. In 2015-16, more than 1.7 million patrons visited one of our library facilities, checking out some 278,600 books and other materials. Our librarians also play an important role in instruction: last year, they provided instruction to approximately 25,600 students on topics ranging from information literacy to bibliography building. The Library also hosts a variety of exhibitions and cultural events, both for the campus and the greater San Diego communities.

Regardless of whether you are a member of the UC San Diego community, a visiting scholar, or a San Diego resident, I hope you will enjoy using our resources, services, and facilities. We greatly appreciate the support of our users and friends in building and sustaining our library and our collections.

With best regards,

Erik Mitchell
